Short version: most homes should buy the Emporia 48A. It is UL listed and works plugged in or hardwired. If you want the most established name, get the ChargePoint HomeFlex. If you rent or want to spend less, the AIMILER portable plugs in and moves with you.

This is the one most homes should buy. It is UL listed, and one box installs two ways: plug it into a 14-50 outlet at up to 40A now, or hardwire it for the full 48A later.

How to choose in 60 seconds
- Check your panel. A charger needs a breaker 25% bigger than its output: 32A needs 40A, 40A needs 50A, 48A needs 60A. A panel can be short on free slots or short on spare capacity. Only a load calculation tells you which. If capacity is tight, a charger set to 24A on a 30A circuit often avoids a panel upgrade.
- Check your car. The car's onboard charger sets the top speed. Many EVs accept 11.5 kW (48A). Some accept 7.2 kW or less, and many plug-in hybrids accept only 3.3 to 6.6 kW. A charger faster than your car's limit adds no speed.
- Pick plug-in or hardwired. Hardwired is the more reliable choice for daily use. See plug-in vs hardwired.
- Insist on a safety listing. Look for UL or ETL on the listing. This device moves a lot of power for hours, every night.
