What drives the cost of a home EV charger install

The charger is often the smaller half of the bill. The length of the wire run and the room in your panel decide the rest.
What drives the price
- Distance from panel to charger. Thick copper wire is expensive. A charger on the wall next to the panel is the cheapest install there is.
- Panel capacity. If there is no room for a 50A or 60A breaker, you need a load management device, a smaller charger, or a panel upgrade. The upgrade is the big-ticket item.
- Amperage. A 60A circuit needs heavier wire than a 40A circuit.
- Permit and inspection. Required in most places. Unpermitted electrical work can complicate a fire claim or a home sale. Ask your insurer.
Four ways to pay less
- Mount the charger as close to the panel as the cable reach allows. The chargers here have 23 to 25 ft cables.
- Choose 32A or 40A. See what size you need.
- Ask your power company about charger rebates and EV rate plans. Many utilities pay part of the hardware or install, and some require a specific ENERGY STAR model like the Emporia.
- Get three quotes. Prices for the same job vary widely.
About the federal tax credit
The federal home charger credit (30C) was cut short by Congress and does not apply to chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026. Installs on or before that date may still qualify on a 2026 return. State and utility rebates still exist. Confirm your situation with a tax professional.
