NEMA 14-50 plug vs hardwired: which should you choose?

If you are paying an electrician either way, hardwire it. Choose a plug only if the outlet already exists or you plan to move soon.

The outlet mistake that melts plugs

A 14-50 outlet made for a kitchen range is built for short bursts. An EV pulls close to the maximum for hours, night after night. Cheap residential-grade outlets are a well-known failure point. If you go plug-in, have your electrician install an industrial or EV-rated 14-50 receptacle and torque the terminals to spec.

The GFCI problem

Newer electrical code calls for GFCI protection on EV charging outlets. Every listed EV charger already has its own ground-fault protection, and the two can trip each other. Hardwiring avoids the issue in most jurisdictions. Your local code and inspector have the final word.
