Can a Tesla use a J1772 charger?

Yes. A Tesla, or any car with a NACS port, can charge from any J1772 Level 2 charger through a small J1772 to NACS adapter. Many Teslas shipped with one, so check your trunk and glove box first. The reverse also works with a different adapter. The two adapters are not the same part, and buying the wrong one is the common mistake.

These are AC adapters for Level 1 and Level 2 charging only. They do not work at Superchargers or other DC fast chargers. Fast charging uses different, much larger adapters.
Does an adapter slow charging?
No, as long as the adapter is rated at or above the charger's output. The speed is still set by the charger's amps and your car's onboard charger, whichever is lower. Check your time with the charge time calculator.

- Lectron J1772 to Tesla adapter: for a NACS car on a J1772 charger. The listing states up to 80A at 240V, an IP67 weather rating, and TUV and UL 2251 certifications. Owners like the solid connection and the storage bag. Caveat: owner reports on fit and durability are mixed, and some say the port lock does not always hold it. Try it on your car while you can still return it.
- Lectron Tesla to J1772 adapter: for a J1772 car on a Tesla Wall Connector, destination charger or Mobile Connector. The listing states up to 48A at 240V and SGS certification under the UL 2251 standard. Caveat: owner feedback is mixed. Some report charging that stops partway and an adapter that gets hot after a couple of hours, and some find the fit very tight. If yours runs hot, stop using it.

Adapter or native plug?
- Only NACS cars in the house, now and later: a native NACS charger means no adapter to lose. The EVIQO NACS 48A is our Amazon pick. Caveat: it has few reviews so far. Tesla's own Wall Connector, sold by Tesla, is the default for Tesla owners.
- A mix of cars, or you may switch brands: buy a J1772 charger such as the Emporia 48A and keep an adapter on the holster for the NACS car. Caveat: the adapter is one more part to wear out or misplace.

Adapter safety
An adapter is one more connection carrying full power for hours. Buy one that states a safety certification. Keep the pins clean and dry. Do not leave it lying on the ground. Stop using it if it feels hot, looks discolored or fits loosely. Never stack two adapters.
