Can you charge an EV from a dryer outlet?

Yes, in many homes. A 30A dryer circuit can feed an EV charger set to 24A or less. That adds about 17 miles of range per hour, or roughly 171 miles in a 10 hour night. The catches are the outlet type, sharing with the dryer, and the age of the wiring.
Know which dryer outlet you have

The 24A limit comes from the same rule as every EV circuit. Charging is a continuous load, so the charger may draw only 80% of the breaker rating. 80% of 30A is 24A.
Four mistakes to avoid
- Plugging a 32A or 40A charger in with an adapter. A cheap 14-50 to 14-30 adapter lets a 40A charger pull 40A from a 30A circuit. The breaker should trip. You do not want to count on "should" every night. Only use a charger that is set to 24A or less.
- A plain Y-splitter. If the dryer and the car run together on one 30A circuit, the circuit is overloaded. Automatic switching splitters exist that power one device at a time. If you buy one, look for a UL or ETL listing on the splitter itself. We have not checked any of them for this site.
- Extension cords. Household extension cords are not built for this load.
- Daily plugging and unplugging. Dryer outlets are not made for that. Worn contacts get hot. If you must share the outlet by hand, check the plug for heat and browning often.
What we would do instead
None of the chargers on this site ships with a 14-30 plug, and the 14-30 chargers we saw on Amazon today were from little-known brands with few reviews. So we do not name one.
- Keep the dryer circuit for the dryer and add an EV circuit. If your panel has little spare capacity, a hardwired charger set to 24A on its own 30A circuit often avoids a panel upgrade. Most smart chargers let your electrician set a lower max output. The Emporia 48A is our pick for this because it can be turned up later if you upgrade the panel. Caveat: it must be hardwired for this, so it is not a renter's fix.
- If a 50A circuit is possible, a plug-in unit like the EVIQO 40A adds about 29 miles per hour. Caveat: it needs a 14-50 outlet on a 50A circuit, not a dryer outlet.
